May 16, 2016

Welcome to Monday, and I hope everyone had a great weekend. This is our last full week of classes, and it will be a busy one.

This morning during assembly, we held our awards presentation. Students earned many different awards. Here's the list of winners from our Terrific Third Grade classroom:

Music - Marianne
Christian Living - Fiona
PE - Fiona
Art - Yoko
Chinese - Reila
Computer - Grace
Library Book Report - Fiona

Grade 3 Classroom Awards:
Most Helpful - Yoko
Most Cooperative - Katie
Most Responsible - Grace

Congratulations to all the recipients of the awards! (pictures at the bottom of this blog)

Following Assembly, we had some time to talk about our weekend activities and left Reading and Phonics for ECA time.
During Math, we used different fractions to name the same amount (equivalent fractions). We watched a short video, and played some fraction games.
For Social Studies, the students were eager to open their store and sell their product. They were given 15 minutes to get the supplies they need and make as many products as they could.  Following this production time, each student was given $5 to buy the products from each other's stores, and we also had two teachers purchasing items as well. It was interesting to see how the supply/demand worked out, along with the competition.  (pictures at the bottom of this blog)
ECA/Reading and Phonics - we began putting our persuasive essays into paragraphs using the ideas from last week. There was an emphasis on writing with more "voice" in a way that the words in the essay sound like the author. Also, it is encouraged to make the sentences sound positive.

HOMEWORK:
1) Math p. 125
2) Producer Worksheet in the My Future booklet

NOTICES
- Chinese and Music final exams are this Thursday
- PE, Computer, and Chinese final exams will be on Friday

Have a great evening!

May 13, 2016

It's Friday the 13th with a full moon! Don't walk under any ladders, cross the path of a black cat, or break a mirror, otherwise you'll have some bad luck. Ha, superstitions are funny.

On this Friday the 13th, our classroom time was minimal as we began the day with our final Mass of the year. The gym smelled amazing from all the lovely flowers present to honor Mary and all you Mother's for Mother's Day.

Following Mass, we completed the spelling test and reviewed yesterday's fraction homework.

The rest of the day was specialty classes and electives.

HOMEWORK:
1) Math worksheet - a review sheet from yesterday's lesson
2) Persuasive Essay - please have your Opening paragraph and Closing paragraph completed (if you haven't already finished it). We will continue to work through the rest of the essay next week. For a guide, you can refer to p. 437 in your English text.

Spelling Words for the last Spelling Test
lever, inclined plane, pulley, fulcrum, compound machine, wheel-and-axle, wedge, screw, equivalent, length, halves, bookmark, fortune, width, poetry, grasshopper, summer, vacation, graduation, Canada

NOTICES:
  • Final Exam schedule and study guides have been handed out (some guides are double-sided)
  • Monday - Awards Presentation for each class during Assembly
  • Final exams will begin next Thursday
  • May 25 and 26 are half-days where students will write 2 exams in the morning, and go home at lunch time

May 11, 2016

Half way through the week, and our Terrific Third Graders continued to work hard, as usual.

In Language Arts/Reading, we took the next planning step for the persuasive essay by supporting our reasons with facts, and not opinions. The students wrote a quiz on Aero and Officer Mike.

For Math, we began the new unit on fractions. Today we read and wrote fractions to name parts of a whole and a group.

Science consisted of a quiz on Matter.

The last period, Social Studies, was the one all students were looking forward to. Each group chose a company name and product yesterday, and today they marketed their product with an advertisement.

Company Name: Magic Fortune Tellers - Selling Fortune Tellers

Company Name: Cute Animal Bookmarks - Selling Bookmarks

Company Name: Future - Selling Fortune Tellers
